There are no accurate figures for the number of people with varicose veins. Some studies suggest that 3 in 100 people suffer from them at some time in their lives. Other studies suggest that this figure could be much higher. Most people with varicose veins do not have an underlying disease and they usually occur for no apparent reason.
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that you can see just under the skin. They usually occur in the legs, but can also form in other parts of the body.
Even though varicose veins do not usually cause symptoms or complications, they are not only unsightly, but can sometimes be painful too. If you have them it means that your blood circulation is hampered, causing the veins to bulge. Some people turn to surgery to fix this issue, but there are a lot of home remedies that can eliminate the problem very efficiently.
We recommend you to try some of these self-care measures as they can significantly improve your condition:
1. Chili Pepper
Chili Pepper greatly improves your blood circulation and it is excellent for decongesting your clogged veins. In fact many doctors recommend their patients with varicose veins to consume chili peppers.
Garlic is an excellent alternative to chili peppers. It can reduce inflammation brought by poor blood circulation and many specialists recommend adding garlic to your daily diet. If you don’t like eating garlic, you can still use it as a cream. Mince some garlic cloves and add a bit of alcohol. For optimal results apply this solution to your veins at least four times a week.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Even though consuming Apple Cider Vinegar carries many benefits, you don’t have to do it for this remedy. All you have to do is to moisten a towel or a cloth with vinegar and place it on you varicose veins. Leave it there for about five minutes. You can also massage the affected areas but make sure you’re not applying too much pressure.
4. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera has a cooling effect which is very efficient in relieving pain. However, the hot version can be used to treat your varicose veins. You should apply the gel to affected area before bedtime and leave them there overnight.
5. Watch what you wear
Avoid high heels. Low-heeled shoes work calf muscles more, which is better for your veins. Don’t wear tight clothes around your waist, legs or groin. Tight panty-leg girdles, for instance, can cut off blood flow.
6. Olive Oil
Increasing blood circulation is essential to treating varicose veins. Massaging with olive oil can help increase circulation, thereby reducing pain and inflammation. Mix equal amounts of olive oil and vitamin E oil and warm it slightly. Massage the veins with the warm oil for several minutes. Do this twice daily for one to two months.
7. Witch hazel
It is a very effective herb for strengthening blood vessels and hence can reduce the symptoms of varicose veins. Apart from being an astringent, it also contains gallic acid and several essential oils that can help reduce the swelling as well as the pain. Soak a washcloth in witch hazel and place it on the affected area. Do this two or three times a day for one or two months.
The beautiful marigold flower is a rich source of flavonoids and vitamin C that stimulate the production of collagen and aid in cell repair and reproduction. It also helps improve circulation, thus helping alleviate various symptoms of varicose veins. Boil one cup of marigold flowers in four cups of water for five minutes. Soak a cotton cloth in the solution and place the cloth on the affected area. Leave it on until it completely cools. Repeat several times a day for a few months until you notice improvement.
9. Elevate your legs
To improve the circulation in your legs, take several short breaks daily to elevate your legs above the level of your heart. For example, lie down with your legs resting on three or four pillows.
10. Green Clay Ointment
Prepare a paste or an ointment containing green clay then mix it with a little water. When ready, apply to your varicose veins and leave it there overnight. In the morning wash it off with warm water and unscented soap.
11. Immersion Baths
Prepare yourself a relaxing bath, add sea salt and a glass of apple cider vinegar. Relax for about 20 minutes, if you wish you can also gently massage your legs while doing this remedy.
12. Wear compression stockings
Not a new solution, but still one of the best! I wouldn’t go anywhere without a pair of compression stockings to keep my legs strong throughout the day. They definitively helped me to get rid of varicose veins.
13. Sit Right
If you do have to sit for long periods of time, make sure that you are sitting properly. Sit with good posture, and keep your legs on the floor. Sitting cross legged or sitting on your legs can hurt your circulation.
Getting regular exercise help with the body’s circulation, and that includes circulating blood through varicose veins. Make sure that you get enough exercise, at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week to keep your blood circulating optimally.
15. Essential oils
Massage your legs using essential oils. Start with your feet and move upward. Be sure to always be gentle and move in a circular way. It is recommended giving your legs a massage in the evening, before bedtime.
